Which part on my computer is broken?  (rates assumed below do not apply to laptop computers)

Does the computer shut down completely by itself? (self restarting is covered below)

You most likely have 1 of the following:

faulty power in the home: (are other things shutting off also?)

a bad power supply in the computer (parts and labor totaling $165 for same day repair - in home for no extra)

a bad motherboard (parts and labor totaling $205 in most cases - in home for no extra)

a bad processor (parts and labor totaling $205 in most cases - in home for no extra)

a bad ram stick (parts and labor totaling $205 in most cases - in home for no extra)

Does your computer crash to a blue screen with white text and an error code?

Call us with the error codes if you are able to write them down.  The most pertinent ones usually begin with 0x and are 10 digits long.

The screen is sometimes accurate in troubleshooting your hardware issue.  If you have recently (in the last week) installed a new piece of computer hardware it may be the cause; this includes USB devices like printers and IPODs as well as internal upgrades.  With that in mind, try using the computer without any of these USB devices attached and see if you get the same response.

These blue screens (called bsod in the computer world) may also be caused by a failing motherboard, processor, hard drive, or ram chip.  Usually only 1 part on the computer needs replacement and these service calls average $195 with all parts and labor included.  For a better diagnostic please call and speak to one of our highly trained and friendly professionals.

When you push the power button is the computer completely unresponsive?

You either have a bad power supply or a bad motherboard.  ($165 or $205 on average)

In rare cases (about 1 in 300) your processor may be mis-functioning.

If your computer is making an unusual beeping noise you most likely have a broken ram stick.

Does your computer sometimes shut off and will only turn back on if you wait a few minutes?

This may be one of a few things.  If the computer doesn't have adequate ventilation it may be overheating (106 F cabinet temperature in most cases)

If your computer is in a properly ventilated area, the computer fans may be failing.

If your processor was changed or the heatsink/fan was replaced, this area should be checked to see that thermal compound was spread on the processor and that the heatsink is flush and tight with the processor.

If you've recently installed a high grade video card it may likely be producing an excessive amount of heat for the computer case, fan upgrades will need to be installed.  The video card may also be demanding more electricity than the power supply can offer.  A power supply upgrade may be necessary.

If none of the above apply, you most likely need a new motherboard or power supply. ($165 or $205 on average)
