Hard Drive Noise
There are several noises that a hard drive will make, after all, there is a platter spinning around, usually at greater than 5400 Revolutions per minute, slowing down, stopping and speeding up at times. Hard drives use a head, much like a record player does, except with much greater precision and much less tolerant of inconsistencies on the platter.
Regular noise - shouldn't be overly loud and definitely should not follow a pattern. There should never be a sound like anything is grinding.
Irregular noises
Clicking - When your hard drive begins it's operation, it does a self test where is reads from the outer edge of the platter to the inner radii. When this test fails, the reading head reverts to the outside and starts the test over. This is the clicking noise. It's not clicking against the platter, it's simply clicking back to the outer edge of the reading heads enclosure. If this has just started the data recovery may be very successful and very affordable. Turn off the machine and call for your appt asap.
Grinding - This noise is very clear if you have it, it's loud and scary. Your disc is actually grinding against something inside. You should turn your computer off asap and call us.
